Haven't Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu‑ting of Chinese Taipei been mired in controversy because each has a disorder of sexual identity? If so, you would never know it from the Guardian story that's linked in this piece.
What's crazy is that both have XY chromosomes, which should be dispositive, no?
Even though people with disorders of gender identity make up a fraction of a percent of the population, one would think that by now there would be a consensus as to whether individuals having the characteristics of each such disorder are male or female. It shouldn't be necessary to treat each new individual as a unique case, should it?
Honestly, the Guardian's reporting here is so strained and patently ideologically biased that I imagine it must be what passes for journalism in countries where state media runs roughshod over free speech.
Perhaps I'm missing part of the International Boxing Association's (IBA) story, but the IBA's current predicament as reported in the Guardian ("the IBA has been banned from running the Olympic boxing tournament in Paris because of long-running questions surrounding governance issues and a series of judging scandals") reminds me of the way the authoritarians suppress dissident organizations by entangling them in ginned-up controversies and bogus legal proceedings.
It seems that what's really going on is that the IBA has been sidelined because it defends women in sports against faux female competitors, and the IOC does not.
I think Sean Ingle who wrote the Guardian piece was being super cautious about whether or not the boxers have DSDs. As far as I've been able to tell, the most accurate thing that can be said about them is that they have XY chromosomes, so whether they are trans-identifying males or males with a DSD, the problem is, they are male competing in the female category. And in boxing, that means even equally weight-matched fighters, males punch 2.6 times harder than females, and have longer reach. Dispositive? Yes, lethally so.
Though he is cautious, I applaud Sean Ingle because he is one of the only legacy media journalists who will even cover discrimination against women in sports. He was maybe the only one to point out in 2021 that there was no way to "balance" fairness and inclusion of male athletes in women's sports.
"It seems that what's really going on is that the IBA has been sidelined because it defends women in sports against faux female competitors, and the IOC does not." Very accurate, imo
We ALL know that there are men who will enjoy seeing women severely injured and even killed. There are all too many men who enjoy beating up their wives, girlfriends, and prostituted women. And even more men who would not do that themselves, but somehow think it right that men can do that with "their own women".
Thank you for reminding me of the obvious ! I guess I was thinking about men getting off on seeing this as entertainment - but yes this also has a long history . My mother hated movies where women were beaten by men - particularly because it was so often played for laughs .
Hi, Sarah. I love your articles when I get a chance to read them (I plan to catch up soon) -- and apologize at the outset for telling you about a typo... 4th paragraph, 1st line, 14th word: public?
I suggested elsewhere that the women boxers should boycott this travesty, especially as it is hazardous to their safety. For me, I haven't been interested in the Olympics since 1972 (that's showing my age! 🙃) But this is still a disgusting and unjust state of affairs. Shame on the IOC!!! And thank you, Sarah, for your words in support of female athletes everywhere! ❤️
I'm normally not in favor of women opting out competing because 1) the man wins, 2) women just lose an opportunity and are sometimes punished for doing so, and 3) the rules don't change. In the case of boxing, where there's significant risk to safety and even life, I support any woman's right to protect herself by boycotting.
No problem, I can't quite help myself, since proofreading used to be one of my jobs! That's a good way to see it -- boycott to save your life, otherwise fight for fairness in other more effective ways? You got it, Sarah! Every day I feel thankful for folks like you who are speaking out with passion and intelligence. I try to in my own way, and have had a bit of success, but am glad there are writers and speakers on Substack and elsewhere. We'll get there eventually (sooner than later, I hope). Best wishes to you ❤️👍🏼
The IOC has always been sexist. Remember in 2005 when the Olympic official expressed concern with women’s reproductive organs being damaged if they were allowed to compete in ski jumping?

IOC need to be called out on the world stage for injustice to women.

I just saw this on Sean Ingle's (wrote about the boxers for the Guardian) X account, his questions and IOC's answers. https://x.com/seaningle/status/1818317476184440905/photo/1

Love this dripping sarcastic and spot on humor. So sick of the scumbags.
A cartoon I did on this assault (LITERAL!!!) on women and girls: https://open.substack.com/pub/annecantstandit/p/game-over-guys?r=qowdg&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

It is insane that the IOC is promoting males in to female sport. The "I" in IOC must stand for idiot.
