Sarah, you do not sound like a broken record. This is an original observation and challenge. I think we should take you up on it and use this terminology of mixed sex sports instead of girls’ sports when talking about those states and other circumstances such as locker rooms, which you also note.

Another excellent observation by Sarah because language counts and this tells the truth about the travesty of males in females' sports. I often comment in the NY Times when there is an opportunity about this and I am shocked (and shouldn't be) that so many supposedly educated NYT's readers use the ridiculous excuse that because there are so "few" males trying to compete against females that it is cruel to have rules banning males from female sports and spaces at all. This whining submission to a ridiculous attack against females, yet another backlash being perpetrated to keep females in their place is rampant on the political left and should not be a political issue in the first place. Denial of science is dangerous in many ways, including over this issue.
Let's try this one on: In early civilizations there existed matriarchies, societies that respected and elevated women to positions of power, leadership and respect. In the Levant and the Mediterranean cultures along came patriarchical zealots who wrote the bible and claimed that Eve was made from Adam's rib and that this less-than-fully-human female was the cause of humanity being thrown out of Paradise because Eve was so stupid as to believe the snake and dare to seek knowledge. In ancient cultures the snake represented wisdom and Eve's seeking knowledge became the downfall of humanity and females had to be repressed forever after. Now we have the real scientific evidence that there are only two sexes/genders, XX for female and XY for male with any individual with a Y chromosome being male. Think about a new metaphor for the Adam's Rib myth and suggest that the Y chromosome was really EVE'S rib that created the male sex and and that men were so jealous and threatened by the power of females to perpetuate the human race through our singular ability to give birth that this narrative out of the ancient desert took hold, has never gone away and continues to harm females. So here we are, over and over and over again in nearly all cultures and religions denying girls and women the truth of our very existence and rights.
Title IX was passed over the hysterics of those who fought to prevent any $ from going to sports for girls and women, and they lay in wait all this time and found a way to bulldoze Title IX. Just redefine the language. I remember the rage, and the argument that if a female can't compete on a team with males, then she should stay off the court/field/pool, etc. In their pea brains, it was all a zero-sum game.
It is the same situation with the "ladies room" and "women's spas" which are now mixed.
